Large objects can be investigated with the
use of an external beam. (In this case the
beam spot size is normally in the order of
a few hundred microns, but it can be
scanned as normally. This beam size is
sufficient for external beam applications.)
The pictures below show an experiment when a
Gilded Cross was irradiated. The aim of this work was
to characterise the elemental composition of small
parts of the cross. External beam microPIXE/RBS was
the only sufficient analytical technique to
complete the given job.
